THE NIPPON FOUNDATION - ÇOMÜ JAPANESE LANGUAGE EDUCATION FUND PROGRAM (NF-JLEP)
The Nippon Foundation Fund for Japanese Language Education (日本語教育基金, "NF-JLEP") is a distinguished global initiative established by The Nippon Foundation in 1994. The program's core mission is to promote and enhance Japanese language education globally. Currently, the fund provides crucial financial support to Japanese language education departments across 11 universities in 6 countries. NF-JLEP tailors its support to meet regional needs, focusing on areas such as developing the fundamental skills of Japanese language learners and foreign language instructors, as well as supporting the development of effective teaching materials.
The Japanese Language Teaching (JLT) Department at Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University (ÇOMÜ) has been an integral and proud member of this prestigious global network since 1996, continuously strengthening the quality of learning experiences for its students. Initially, from 1996 to 2020, the fund directly supported undergraduate students, providing monthly scholarships to the top four academically successful students in each class level. Additionally, five successful undergraduate students were awarded travel grants each summer to participate as a delegation in 3-week intensive educational programs in Japan. Following the establishment of the JLT Master's Program in 2020, The Nippon Foundation revised the fund's mandate. Since 2021, the fund has been dedicated to advancing postgraduate scientific research and fostering qualified young researchers, now operating as a research support fund for graduate students. This transition has resulted in the successful support of more than 10 postgraduate scientific research projects over the last four years (See Table 1). This enduring collaboration ensures the department remains committed to excellence in Japanese language education and research.
